Can Star Trek Be Cool Again?
With the new movie, Star Trek is going to the young and hip angle that will attract new viewers rather than simply pull in the same old fans. It brings back some of the excitement that people felt with the original series but presented in a way that will resonate with the current viewers. It is a prequel to the original series, and for many new viewers it will serve as a the first real introduction to the original Star Trek characters. Captain Kirk shows up as a young boy with a defiant attitude. Later, we see some familiar characters---like Spock, Kirk, and Scotty---in their early years as part of star fleet. The movie seems to be packed with action and, of course, sexuality. If you have watched many of the Star Trek movies, you know that they all start with several scenes that serve to introduce the characters and set the premise of the movie. Typically, these scenes are very boring. The new movie, though, ads a new flair with young characters with attitude problems that will instantly catch your attention. What I can see right away is that this movie will be exciting for new viewers. What is yet to be seen is whether the die-hard Star Trek fans will take to the recasting of young versions of their favorite characters from the original series.
