Coraline - Dangerous Love
Henry Selick's new animated feature, Coraline, is a visual wonder with an equally compelling message. Made through the old-school technique of stop-motion animation, Coraline retains a hand-made quality that is lost in most modern CGI productions. You sense that you are watching objects that actually exist in the world, loving created and animated by skilled artists. The visual splendor is subtly enhanced by watching the movie in 3D. While most 3D movies strive to shock the viewer with one illusionary projectile after another, Coraline takes a quieter approach by simply inviting you to explore this fantastical world alongside the heroine. Coraline (voiced by Dakota Fanning) is a spunky girl with an independent streak and bright blue hair. After moving to a new town, a lonely Coraline feels abandoned by her parents who are too busy working to play with her. Coraline discovers a mysterious little door in her new house, and eventually finds that she can travel through it to a parallel world, where an Other Mother and Other Father are waiting for her. While the Other Mother initially caters to Coraline's every whim, the fact that she possesses two shiny black buttons, in place of her eyes, hints at the Other Mother's hidden sinister nature. The Other Mother may love Coraline, but the line between love and obsession is thinner than we would often like to admit. What Coraline, and younger viewers of the film will learn, is that sometimes someone who “can't live without us” is the most dangerous person around.
