Surrealism

Watching the inauguration of Barack Obama today was an almost surreal experience for me. It was really hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that it was actually happening. An African American man is now the President of the United States! I can hardly believe that it is true. I definitely did not expect that there would be a black man in the Oval Office in my lifetime. I felt certain that we would see a white woman president before we ever saw a person of color in that position. Throughout Obama's inaugural speech, I kept thinking that this black man--who is married to a woman who is the descendant of slaves, and whose children are also the descendants of slaves-- will now go and live in the White House, which was largely built by slaves. I wish that I could have been in Washington DC to experience the event firsthand and share it with millions of others who were as excited and emotional as me. I am a white person living in a predominantly white neighborhood and even though many of my neighbors voted for Obama, they don't seem especially moved by what an historic moment this is.
