Improve the Firefox Readability on Your Television
If you've built a media center PC for your home television, then you might have experienced small fuzzy text on your TV. Many times, it's really hard to make out what the text on your screen say from 20 feet away on your sofa.
Today, I found that I can easily resolve that in Firefox. Simply change the font configuration in "Tools -> Options... -> Content". When you get to that configuration page, ignore the settings in "Fonts & Colors". Instead, click on the "Advanced..." button. Change "Minimum font size:" to 24 (or some other size you prefer). Then uncheck "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above". Click the "OK" button to save this configuration.
Back at the "Content" option page, you can keep "Times New Roman" if you like. But for a TV 20 feet away, I found "Arial" a lot easy to read. Once you are happy with your settings, click the "OK" button to save your settings. Now you can enjoy your media center computer from the couch.

By default, Firefox places the menu, navigation bar, and bookmark bar on top. It takes up quite a bit of screen space, especially if you are using your computer for your television. If you want to watch a video or movie in your browser, those bars on top really distract your viewing pleasure. To remove the toolbars, simple click "View" -> "Toolbars" and then deselect the toolbars you want to remove.
You can still navigate around the web by using the right-click on empty spaces of web pages. To load a new web address, simply click "File" -> "Open Location...", then enter the URL.
The status bar down below is also a distraction. You can click "View" and deselect "Status Bar" from the menu.
After you have disabled all these on-screen displays, you can get even more screen space by press F11 (or click on "View" -> "Full Screen") to remove as many windows frame elements as possible.

Disabling Tabs
The use of tabs on top of browsers is extremely innovative. And I can't do without tabs while I use my computer daily. But I find tabs distracting and taking up screen space on my entertainment PC. It's better to turn it off and open web pages in new windows.
To do that, simply click "Tools" -> "Options...". Click "Tabs". Then select "a new window". Click "OK" to save your settings.

Firefox recently upgraded itself to version 3.0.5 and the font has became huge. Upgrading to the latest 3.0.9 didn't help solve that problem. Now I can read the font quite easily from my sofa. But it's overflowing the browser screen. Adjusting the font size to 14 on 1024x768 resolution seems better for my TV set. You'll have to adjust your font to your liking after upgrading to the newer Firefox.
