Claire and Peter
In the first season of Heroes, when he was visited by Hiro Nakamura from the future, Peter Petrelli was given a job to do. His mission was "save the cheerleader, save the world," possibly the most often repeated line on the show. So, he traveled to Texas, despite the efforts of his brother, who wanted to keep him away from there because of what one of Isaac Mendez's paintings depicted. In the end, Peter's intervention saved Claire from being killed by Sylar, though it did lead to her eventual confrontations with her father. When I watched this episode, I saw what was clearly chemistry between the two characters. My mother said the exact same thing. In fact, we both predicted that the two would quickly become love interests in the next few episodes.
We were proven wrong rather quickly. A few episodes later, Claire's biological mother, Meredith Gordon, called her real father: Nathan Petrelli. That squashed any hope of a romance between Peter and Claire, unless the writers wanted them to commit incest. Of course, the revelation made sense, since it lent further evidence to the fact that these superpowers seemed to be perpetuated along family lines. Plus, there was also the fact that Peter had fallen in love with Simone, though at the time, we did not know that Isaac would shoot her later on. Either way, it seemed that there would be no romance between the two characters.
However, I quickly found out that the chemistry that I had sensed between Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia was very real. One of the major "stories" about the actors of the show was increased speculation that the two were dating, based on interaction between the two and rumors that Hayden had asked Milo to move in with her. Although they started out denying any kind of romance, in 2008, the two admitted that they were in a relationship. Now, the episode where I first noticed said chemistry was filmed and aired well before they were dating. In fact, it was filmed and aired before she was even eighteen. Nonetheless, the two worked well together in a very natural way, and they likely noticed this themselves before they started going out. So, fans of celebrity romances can whet their appetites in another new way by watching the drama of a show for comic book nerds.
So what does their relationship mean for the show? Potentially, nothing. It could help to bring the cast closer together, which is always helpful, as friends work better together. People could be extremely supportive of their relationship. On the other hand, should the two have an awkward breakup during the course of the show, things could get very messy. Breakups can have disastrous effects on a television show, especially when their characters are as crucial to the plot as theirs are. That would be the worst case scenario, but it could happen. After all, there is a twelve-year age difference in the mix. However, I wish them both the best for their relationship. At the very least, Hayden's mom likes him, so that is a good start.
