Acting Still Good but Writing is Poor

The most recent episode of NCIS entitled “Power Down” was the probably one of the odder episodes in the history of the show. In order to believe the episode we have to accept that the power could be knocked out for the entire capitol region for a period of days and the biggest issue NCIS would need to solve would be a single murder.

In the episode the running theme is that without electricity the team would have to do everything old school. Obviously the only one who is at all comfortable with this is Gibbs. The others (especially McGee) struggle mightily with being able to complete what would normally be easy assignments if normal technology was available. This gag plays out over and over again and quite honestly slows the pace of the episode.

The murder plot in this case is pretty far fetched as well. We must believe that every optical iris scanner has a default in it that will allow 2 eyes to work the door no matter the setting. One of these eyes belongs to our murder victim in this episode. The quirkiness of this episode is quite frankly concerning. Writing with the exception of the season premiere this year has been very weak. It appears that the development of the spin-off has hurt the quality of the original.

The actors do however continue to do a great job with what they have to work with. In this episode the timing for Michael Weatherly is particularly strong. DiNozzo has all the good lines in this episode and he delivers them beautifully. Early in the episode when he gets caught again by Gibbs saying something that he shouldn't his facial expressions are hilarious.

Gibbs (Mark Harmon) continues to captain this show both with the character he portrays and the quality of his acting. In particular the stretch where he is showing them how to use a 30 year old copy machine is fantastic. Bellasario shows always have strong male leads but Gibbs is truly the masterpiece. He has the humor of Magnum and the strength of the central character of Jag. Harmon also portrays him in a way that is vulnerable yet incredibly strong.

This show has earned the honor of being the most popular show on television for a reason. I just hope the writing gets better quickly. NCIS has always been kind of a stretch from the real world. However, unless the writing gets more plausible their hold on the top spot will be unfortunately short lived.
