Gibbs is in Charge Even When He's not in Charge
We saw this in the past when Tony was told to head up a case and everyone wanted to still have Gibbs be the one they answered to. That made sense in the respect that Gibbs was the higher ranking person in the organization, but this week we saw it is more than rank that defines who is in charge.
In this episode we saw Leon Vance start the episode with a case that he was personally attached to. So, instead of allowing Gibbs to do his job, Vance demanded he be in charge of the case and that everyone was to answer to him and not bring Gibbs into the loop.
As you can imagine, it didn't go well.
Early on, Gibbs visits Ducky who, as we know, can't keep anything quiet and gives him the details of what he is finding from the body that was brought in.
Next, Gibbs needs more details. He heads to Abby's lab. She makes it clear that she can't tell him details of what is happening and is hoping that he is not planning on bribing her. He sets a Calf-Pow on the counter and she starts to tell him the type of things that she wouldn't be able to say to him, in such a way that in her head she has not gone against what she said she would do.
One of the funny moments is when Vance walks into Abby's lab and asks if Gibbs has been snooping around. In her inability to lie well, she says 'of course not, why would you ask because of the smell of Old Spice and sawdust?'
She and Palmer then try to come up with reasons the lab would smell like those two things. They ramble through a group of chemicals that could create the smell of Old Spice and then when Vance asks about the sawdust smell Abby says she is taking up woodworking and Jimmy says she is making a coffin. It was a very funny (and uncomfortable looking) moment.
Speaking of funny, There were a few quotes that were great. One of them is attributed to Ziva and her continued misunderstanding of clichés. She says that you 'can't break an omelet without breaking some legs.' to which Tony responds with "She's never making me breakfast."
Hopefully she will never completely learn to make sense of English!
