How I spent My Summer Ends
The most recent episode of NCIS finally closed the loop on the events of this summer. In this episode we finally had all the questions about the past months answered with of course the exception of the relationship between Ziva and Tony which is still left unresolved. Just like past Belasario dramas (Magnum and JAG come to mind) the romance between the two will continue to be dragged out for years.
In this episode we learn that after Ziva was left on the runway in Israel (but before she is rescued by Tony and McGee) she was on a mission for Moussad that destined for Somalia. Ziva and her partner were on a ship heading for Mogadishu when they were exposed. In the resulting gun battle Ziva'a partner was wounded and a AWOL marine was killed. The dead marine was the loose tie in to make it a case that Gibbs could investigate. When Ziva and her partner make it to land she abandons her partner on the dock to complete what they both believe is a suicide mission. She is eventually taken prisoner as she attempts to complete her mission which of course explains how we got to a previous episode where she is rescued by Tony and McGee.
As the episode completes the past it also sets up the future. Eventually we learn that Ziva still wants to become a full time member of NCIS but is having trouble completing parts of the process. At the end of the episode with Vance and Gibbs supporting the move Ziva is told that she is the new “Probie” as the last line in the episode.
While the “How I Spent My Summer” episodes are extremely popular with fans the writers and producers should figure out a way to better involve Ducky and Abby in the plots. Just like the first few episodes from last year Ducky and Abby become minor bit players instead of their usually critical roles. The show is number one in the ratings so the formula is working, it is just too bad it is done at the expense of two great characters.
The relationship between Ziva and Tony will continue to drag on for years. This reminds us of the romance between the two jag lawyers on JAG or Magnum and Elizabeth on the original Magnum PI. In both these shows also produced by Donald Belasario the romantic tension stretched on for months and even years before the plot finally reached resolution. Expect nothing less from the NCIS crew this time.
Next week we will get back to the normal business of NCIS with what looks to be a fantastic Halloween episode. This is another great start to the season of this popular show.
