Just Who Is Ducky?

This week's episode of NCIS found me asking, just who is Ducky?

When you think about the character of Dr. Donald Mallard, or Ducky, you think of a cute Brit who talks to corpses and always has a story to tell that has nothing to do with the important cases that need to be solved.

But from time to time you get a little glimpse that there was something more sinister in his past. We all know Ducky was in the British Military for some time, and he and Gibbs periodically exchange 'knowing looks' when it comes to having bad pasts, but he never wants to talk about it or delve into the specifics. Instead, he usually says something cute and everyone looks away from the demons that were about to peek their heads out. But, not this time. This week, the ugly parts of his past are coming to the forefront.

While I had seen the commercials to know what was coming up, when I saw the woman cross the police line and attack him with a number of police right there, I had to think about that vision. What would cause a person to take such a chance, pick up a weapon at a crime scene and go right past the tape where there are all of those officers are nearby with guns on hand?

Don't get me going on the knife in the hand of Ducky right before the first commercial break. That was a bit much to see. Yet, coming back from the break, it was heartening to see Ducky being funny while under medication in the hospital.

During his recuperation, at home, there is a bad open, a sparrow flying in the house. This omen is said to mean that someone in the home will die. As always, one of those things the writers toss in there to make you worry for the rest of the episode. Very effective.

The basis for Ducky's bad omen surrounds his time in Afghanistan. He recounts his time in a refugee camp on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The woman who stabbed him has accused him or war crimes, resulting in the death of her brother, which he admits.

I am not going to spoil what happens, suffice it to say that I ended the episode with my jaw dropped, not realizing how many types of torture there are, and shocked at the one Ducky went through. The reveal scene showed one of the cruelest characters I have seen on a show in some time, a person I definitely would not like to get to know.
