Learning About Gibbs Through Franks

Fans of NCIS will often try to analyze the lead character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, trying to understand the tragedy that he has faced in his life in order to understand the man. However, the key to understanding the man that Gibbs is today is not just the events of his past, but rather learning about the man who helped make Gibbs that he is today, his former partner and mentor, Mike Franks. While not much is known about the enigmatic Franks, the tidbits that we have gleaned show us just how large of an influence he has been on Gibbs.

First of all, is Franks sense of personal honor, he is willing to do what he thinks is right, regardless of the consequences or the personal cost. This can be shown in the most recent episode, where he tries to make it look as if he killed two men looking for his daughter in law, when it is in fact his daughter and law who killed the men. Gibbs has shown the same dedication to his friends and loved ones.

Franks is also sarcastic, and a big fan of tough love. While he has a tough exterior, it hides his loyalty and his deep affection to those that he cares about. This is definitely a personality trait that Gibbs has adopted for himself.

Finally, Franks, despite his deep sense of duty, Franks had problems dealing with authority, restricting him from getting the job done. This caused him to retire to seclusion in Mexico. While Gibbs once followed Franks' path in this as well, his sense of duty to Country was just a little stronger than Franks, causing him to come back.

Franks has always been ready to help Gibbs, whether it is when he was ready to retire, to help him get his memory back, or in anything else. I am sure that we will continue to learn more about Franks, and through him, Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
