Most Recent NCIS Episode
Recently my wife and I watched “Engaged Part 1” of NCIS. In this episode we joined the NCIS team on their most recent case of military debacles. This episode was a part one of two, but part one could stand alone as an episode itself. I particularly enjoyed this episode because we got more insight on Gibbs and his emotional side. Many times we see this character as a strong impenetrable marine in which no amount of gore or betrayal can faze him. The episode opens with him in his first wife's arms and sets the emotional scene we experience throughout the show. While Gibbs never had children, he treats some of his team as his own children and in this episode; we see the same emotion with the soldier he is trying to find. My favorite scene is with him and the new Chaplin talking to the father of the soldier they are trying to find. Without words, the Gibbs character shares the pain of the father is experiencing and gains this character's confidence in the investigation. As in most episodes, Gibbs was the strongest character, but he alone does not carry the weight of the show. I think what keeps this show strong is what we see in every episode; the character interactions. Gibbs' immediate team of investigators compliment each other in such a way that they have begun to take on each other's traits. I think this decision by the writers allows the viewer to connect and feel like they are becoming a part of the team. Beyond the characters, this show continues to stay consistent with military themes and nuances that a prior service member sees and realizes are dead on to reality. Time after time I am impressed by the small little details that the show incorporates. Particularly in this episode when they showed the scene of the grave of the unknown marine, we could see a changing of the guard and it was very well done. I am excited to see part 2 of this episode not just so we can find out if the soldier escaped Afghanistan, but to see where else the writers of this show take the character development. I am hoping they decide to delve more into Gibbs' relationship status and have him move on and show he is more than just a stone cold marine. My only recommendation is that the show try to explain more of the politics involved or simply ignore them all together.
