Absolution
This episode of NCIS: Los Angeles finally delves deeper into the background of the omnipresent, omnipotent, ever mysterious Hetty Lange, as the team delves into the murder of one Sebastian Renner, an antiques dealer, murdered outside of Hollywood in the beginning of the show. Hetty is determined to find the dealer's list of underground and black market contacts and so sets the team in motion to solve his murder and find the list.
The team begins their investigation while Hetty goes to an upscale assisted living facility to visit a close family member her husband, one Mr. Cole. Hetty is known to the staff as Mrs. Cole and questions this man about the murdered antique dealer; it seems that the this Mr. Cole was smuggled into the country years before by the deceased in exchange for a book of information detailing the mysterious Mr. Cole's past as a KGB agent. This Mr. Cole denies remembering the details regarding the deceased Hetty leaves, frustrated and Hetty leaves without further details being discussed.
Sam and Callen search Renner's home, with no avail and with Hetty's help, the team discovers that Cole's KGB history during the cold war is well chronicled in the elusive little black book, however the book also chronicled the actions and identities of many of his fellow Stazi operatives as well as evidence of many of the KGB's more infamous yet secret operations, including assassinations.
Hetty drops the bomb that this Mr. Cole has many years before had a stroke and is legally blind and also diagnosed with probable early Alzheimer's and is waiting for the team in the boathouse. As usual when it comes to Hetty, Callen is the one who begins to put the pieces together, realizing that Hetty is the one who shot Cole years before, causing the damage that subsequently caused his stroke. Hetty admits she shot him; Callen states he knows Hetty is also the one who saved Cole's life when he was shot and posits the theory that Hetty and Cole find some amount of joy in their unusual relationship.
The team realizes that the information in Cole's book seems to be outdated and not the potential threat they originally thought it might be. As the shows progresses, Hetty meets with a long-ago colleague, Matthias, a foreign operative who asks her to turn over Cole; Hetty refuses and her life is threatened by Matthias, but before he can act on the threat, Hetty's team comes to the rescue, taking Matthias into custody.
