Episode 10/5

Last week's episode saw the return (thankfully) of Linda Hunt's character Hetty-the only character on the show with a personality (and acting skills). Her almost effortless infusion of her character with a sense of mystery stands in stark contrast to Callen-the more he promises to show us, the less we want to know. His increasingly cumbersome backstory is proving to be a real irritant, and its potential as an "anti-plot" device is weekly more apparent. The show's preoccupation with terrorist activity manages to infect the most pivotal historical events of the last two hundred years with an almost amazing banality-it can only become more comical now that Armenian gangsters (a phrase rapidly becoming redundant) are involved. Callen looks about as Armenian as does Wayne Newton.

Almost as entertaining is the writer's obstinacy in trying to portray some (any!) kind of chemistry between Peter Cambor's and Daniela Ruah's characters. She is easily the most unattractive character since "Law and Order-SVU"'s Olivia, and his abortive surfer-dude persona is not up to the task, even when required to merely to keep up with the clich-ridden character portrayed by LL Cool J.
