NCIS - Head of the Class

If you are a regular viewer of NCIS you will be pleased to know that the show is not going anywhere. No network in their right mind would get rid of such a top performing show.

Now in it?s 6th season, NCIS is doing what most shows can't, still trouncing all of the competition.

When it comes to TV shows, often the novelty wears off after a couple of years and people quit watching it. But there is something about NCIS that has the opposite effect. Instead, the show that surrounds the working and personal lives of a team of Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents is going up and up the charts when it should be tapering off.

The ratings are in and NCIS is now averaging around 20 million viewers!

So what makes this show extra special? Well, consider that NCIS doesn't really get a lot of media attention. Think about it. When was the last time you saw NCIS on the cover of an entertainment magazine? That doesn?t really happen. I'm not sure why, but the entertainment media just seems to shy away from this show. They also don't get any award nominations each year even though their writers and actors are heads and tails above many of the shows that are taking the top prizes at the awards shows.

So, what keeps NCIS growing in the ranks of TV viewership? Well here are my thoughts. First, I think it's the writing. There are very few shows on TV these days where you know you are going to get an intense and complete story in each episode. You don?t want to miss a minute of it. It's kind of like getting on a new roller coaster each week. You know there is going to be quite a ride that will have you off of your seat at some point before you get to the finish where you have a sense of relief and accomplishment.

The other thing I think may help is old-fashioned word of mouth. I don't know how many people I have heard talk about the investigative shows they watch and I tell them they should tune into NCIS because it is far better. They become immediate fans and then start telling their friends the same thing. With all of us continuing in this manner we could soon be pushing NCIS off the top of the rating charts!
