Not the Same Old Storyline

I want to take a chance to say BRAVO to the writers of NCIS. I have watched my share of TV shows that have the criminal investigative elements. For a while I was watching CSI Miami and Law and Order, but none of them held me the way NCIS did and does.

While the actors certainly get a lot of credit for doing their jobs and taking on the characters they are given, the major kudos should be going to people we never see in the show - the writers.

The team behind this show is definitely a group of brilliant minds for a number of reasons:

Characters

First, they have created a brilliant array of characters, but not in the traditional sense. Often you see a movie and you know who the strong character is, who the weak one is, who the klutz is, etc. While NCIS has all of these elements, they are not individuals. Instead, each character has weaknesses and strengths and it is by putting them all together that they are one strong character that can put the puzzle of a case together. They are much more human than many of the other characters out there.

Plot

As you would expect, each show in the series is a continuation of a main story line relating to the department as well as cases that are being worked at the time. Where they get points here is that the plot lines they tend to choose are fresh. If at the beginning you think this plot line may be sounding a little too familiar, they will toss a twist or turn into the story that you didn't expect. By the end you will be staring at the screen with your mouth wide open and wondering how you hadn't figured it out.

Subplots

Additionally, these writers appreciate the importance of helping us to better get to know the characters in the show. There are a number of subplots that you wait for, like the tension between Tony and Ziva that you look forward to. Again, they have made this much more like real life than other shows. While there are cases going on and big and important things happening, they have not forgotten the human element. Real life and emotions can always pop up, and do, in the writing for NCIS.

For a change it seems someone got it all right, in one package. There are plenty of shows that have some of these elements and even do a great job at making characters or storylines. But it's the ability to do it all and make it all work together that makes for a really great show.
