Review - NCIS - "Enemies Domestic"
When it came to the second part of this episode, the creators of the show spent great effort in providing younger appearance to the characters. The actors complemented this effort through instances of brilliant acting too. The flash back scenes of 1991 and 1999 were so unique in that it is one of its kind in television history. Vance and Eli looked truly like they are 20 years younger.
Unlike “Enemies Foreign”, this episode was based on Vance and his interactions with Eli.
Getting back to the plot, this NCIS - “Enemies Domestic” episode starts off with a search for Eli David who was missing after the attempt on his life. The show uses Vance's surgery as an occasion to show case the past and present relationships with an amazing use of flash back story telling.
The way the plot moved was akin to an espionage novel by master story tellers like Tom Clancy or Irving Wallace. It took me some time before I could form a clear idea about the direction of the plot. Vance was contacted by McCallister in the past in an attempt to take out a Russian mole in Amsterdam. As Vance was a newbie at that time, he was not going to be able to successfully complete this assignment. A younger Eli had to convince him about this.
As the Palestinian was taken care of after the explosion, the target of suspicion changes to the Americans and the Israelis. This caused Liat to try to fool Ziva by pointing at a piece of evidence left by Eli. Ziva is way too smart to fall for that trap, and became irritated at the attempt.
After Eli was tracked from a near by synagogue, the story from the past is getting revealed more. Vance was supposed to be killed in his Amsterdam assignment and McCallister, who was the brain behind this suicidal operation, is not happy about his escape. McCallister did not likes Eli for saving Vance.
During his surgery, Vance get a clear understanding of McCallister's self serving ways. McCallister tried once more to convince Vance that the Russian was the one who tried to take him out. Vance did not buy this and protected himself from the next murder attempt with the help of a knife, conveniently smuggled on to him!
At the end of the episode, Ziva and Eli reconcile with each other, causing some distress to soft hearted viewers.
As a side note, some of the scenes at the Amsterdam bridge was phony. From certain angles you can easily understand that it was shot some where in the US studios.
