The Power of Ziva

If you have read any of my other blogs on this, you probably know that I really like the character of Ziva David. Is it just me or is it great to see her taking on a small part of the world in each and every episode of the show?

So, what makes up this cool character? Let's start with her background. I love the mystique that comes with her being a Mossad agent that is a liaison to the NCIS team. There is so much mystery that comes with being a foreign agent, especially with all the allusion to the types of interrogation and training she has gone through. She is one of those types of characters that you would image could some up with 16 ways to kill someone with a quesadilla. She did threaten to kill Tony 18 different ways with a paperclip in one episode if I recall.

Next is the motto Ziva lives by - All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing, which is loosely associated to Edmund Burke. Those are really powerful words and a strong quote to follow. It's really easy to do the right thing in your life, by living as a good person, but there's a whole new level to go to when you take action to make things better and stop evil from taking over instead of turning the other way and playing dumb to it.

While her strength in character is very impressive, I really love the fact that she has a few weaknesses. My favorite is her inability to grab a hold of American idioms. It makes perfect sense that someone from another country would not be able to understand all the strange things we do with words in the US, and she is no exception, although she has come a long way in the most recent season and is using some of the idioms correctly.

There is nothing cuter and more endearing than hearing her try to grasp the English language but then end up with saying "spic and spam" instead of "spic and span" or "They're going to try to use her bad taste in men to impregnate her credibility." I wonder just how long it takes the writers to figure out the perfect way to mess with American English to make it believable while also a perfect punch line and not too far-fetched.
