What's So Great About Abby?
I've actually heard this question from a person that detests the show (on no factual basis whatsoever, I might add). Abby is my favorite character on NCIS, and I have watched faithfully from the first season. So, what IS so great about Abby Sciutto? There are many, many reasons she's a great character on the show and could never be replaced. Her attitude and general vibe and zest for her work make every scene she's in fun to watch.
My own personal view of Abby's character is that she simply embodies the "you can be anything you want to be" attitude. She dresses outside the norm for people who usually are in that line of work. She acts a little differently from most people. But she's one of the smartest (albeit fictional) women on prime time television. She doesn't rely on sex appeal nearly as much as most characters do in the genre of show that NCIS is in. She is a role model for the youth of the nation that think because they don't want to be the same as everyone else, they'll never make anything of themselves at all. She is absolute proof, even if she's not real, that you can do it.
Abby is a kind-hearted, sweet, generous woman, as seen in the most recent Christmas episode. She went to McGee to ask for help in granting a wish from "Santa" for a child whose mother was deployed for the holidays. It's that kind of unselfish generosity that makes her character so completely appealing to the general audience, even those who would normally scorn her based on appearance alone.
She looks up to Gibbs as a father figure, and he treats her like a daughter. That is simply cute (for lack of a better word), because Gibbs is definitely not the typical affectionate kind of guy (unlike Tony). Their banter is unusual at times, for sure, but everyone watching understands it's a kind of expression of affection. Let's not forget the Caf-Pow... how many of those has Gibbs bought for her over the years? Maybe every Caf-Pow was an "I love you, kid," from Gibbs. Something to chew on, anyway.
Overall, Abby is a good person, and that's what is so great about her. She's not perfect, but she's real. She fits a niche that most people didn't even know existed until her role came into play on NCIS. She's not typical- she's not a hardened killer like Ziva, or a tease like Tony, or a complete geek like McGee. She's an individual from start to finish.
