Provider of Hope for Real People
One of today's popular new shows, “The Mentalist” which airs on CBS may interest its audience because of one of the main character's ability to access his mentalist abilities in solving crimes. Patrick Jane is played by Simon Baker and appeals to those concerned about real-life situations that may not mirror his cases identically, but in theory; rather, people have a fascination that the ability may truly exist in solving crimes or that it extends into predicting futures).
In the show, Patrick was sort of a celebrity as a pyschic in his past. He claims to have faked that early notoriety, but continues to prod criminals or witnesses into coming forward with information. Most of his colleagues appreciate his accomplishments, but one character (Agent Teresa Lisbon) often complains about his dramatics and disregard for typical lack of restraint, although she can't deny his successes.
As the general population often looks for input into unsolved crimes in our “real world” (particularly cases of missing children), it seems that psychics and other mediums are often brought in to exhaust any leads that may be missed by authorities, no matter how far-fetched they seem to some. Perhaps this is why “The Mentalist” provides for an interesting TV show, but also some thought or wonder into the possibility of Patrick's abilities being an actuality in real life individuals.
