Based on that article, it's either the channel has moved to a different number or I need a specialized DTV antenna, right?

Back in the analog days:

Ch 2-13 are on VHF
Ch 14-xx are on UHF

Before 6/12, the DTV channels are broadcasted on unused channels in the UHF spectrum, since the VHF is in use by analog. E.g. Ch 4.1 is actually RF 36 and Ch 7.1 is RF 53.

Things were good, since UHF is easier to receive than VHF.

After 6/12, some channels move back to VHF spectrum (Ch 7, 9, 11, 13 in LA). So 7.1 is back to RF 7. Ch 2, 4, 5 are still on UHF because lower VHF is prone to interference (or something like that). Regardless, your channel list needs to be re-scanned to pick up the stations at their new spots.

The reason for the switch was so that FCC can repurpose it for something else (white space?).

You don't need a specialized DTV antenna, just something that does VHF/UHF. The old rabbit ears might do the trick. UHF antennas might work if the signal is amplified. What blows is that all the DTV antennas people have been selling are UHF only.

So you are saying that I just need to go to my DTV box and press re-scan channels to resolve this problem?

Exactly.

yes, assuming your antenna can pick up VHF 7, 9, 11, 13...

I think so. I'm still using the same antenna that I used before I got the DTV box.

that guy wrote the article all confusing, although i know he was trying to be technical and articulate, it just wasn't clear
