Stage Fright vs. The Target

Being a new show trying to gain an audience while sitting on a Friday night slot is no easy task. Fortunately for Joss Whedon, he has a ready-made audience that is willing to give anything he puts his name on a try. The pilot episode did enough to create some intrigue for the audience, enough that perhaps people will continue to tune in for the next episode to see how the show progresses.

The second episode, “The Target”, delivered to new and returning viewers in a big way. They managed to pull out the cinematic excitement without disassociating with the questions raised in the pilot episode. This episode made me hopeful for the show because it indicates that the show can deliver the goodness without relying on the sex appeal of its lead actress.

So naturally, a new audience tuning in for the next episode would be expecting something along the same lines. But, for some reason, the third episode “Stage Fright” reverted almost entirely to promoting sex appeal above all else, spending most of the episode focussed on the body parts of an actress who isn't even a regular on the show and on getting Eliza as naked as network television will allow. It barely added anything to the progress of the show in it's “A” plot. The “B” plot was where the action was progressing, but there was so little of it. The conclusion at the end of the episode is that Echo has an awareness and that she can think outside the box. Really? That's it? She showed that better in the previous episode than in this one.

“Stage Fright” is the kind of episode that most save for the midseason when no one is really watching anyway. Not for your third episode, when you're trying to establish yourself. That's a quick way to get yourself cancelled. The previews for the next episode, “Gray Hour” seems interesting and, in my humble opinion, should have been shown third in the series. I'm just saying. Meanwhile, I'm going to pretend that “Stage Fright” never happened
