Director Jenny Sheppard vs. Director Leon Vance

While I watch the seasons of NCIS progress from one to the next, I always find myself wondering about how some characters will compare to others that were on the show in the past. I came to one of these wondering moments at the end of season 5 and the beginning of season 6 as Director Jenny Sheppard died in the series.

Let me start by reliving a little of that season 5 ending. I know it was not just me who had my jaw on the ground when Director Sheppard was there on the ground in a pool of blood and lifeless.

Usually with NCIS you expect there to be someone around to 'help out' when four armed men head into the building guns blazing. You wanted Mike Franks to walk in the door and take out the last of the bad guys and get Jenny to hold on. But by the time he got there, it was too late.

I must say, it was a much better way to go than to let her rot away from the illness they had given her. She went out by doing what she hadn't done in France all those years ago (killing a target) that got her into this ugly situation in the first place.

Then came Director Leon Vance. At first, I was not a fan. But slowly I am warming up to him. I like the fact that he knows a LOT more than he is letting on. But at the same time, since I have come to love Jethro and the team, I periodically find myself getting a little defensive of the way he is treating them.

I suppose that makes him a great and complicated character. While you know he is usually doing the right thing, you don't always want him to. You periodically want him to look away like Jenny did and let the team do what they do best.

I already miss the 'inside joke' references that were always played between Jethro and Jenny from their affair in France all those years ago (I don't really see any room for any such story-lines relating to Director Vance).

I am not writing off the new director just yet. After all, we haven't even seen him for a full season. I am looking forward to them deepening his character and seeing who is really behind that stern look.

Meanwhile, I do take solace that Lauren Holly (Director Sheppard) didn't leave the show because of anything ugly. There are so many of those stories these days of actors vs. producers and 'ugly breakups'. This one was planned and both sides were in on it. What a refreshing change of pace.
