For the Little Cop Inside of All of Us

I honestly don't see the appeal of creating a spin-off of the NCIS series. I suppose I don't have any right to talk since I am a fan of a few other police procedural dramas myself. Maybe shows like these appeal to the little cop inside of all of us, or does knowing and understanding the day to day of police work make us all feel a little safer? I can't answer that, but what I can say is that NCIS does have some appealing episodes. What I particularly love about NCIS is the characters and how they make the episodes interesting.

The original NCIS was appealing enough as it was with all of its colorful characters and their own drama, and it's rather surprising how the writers are able to continually write new episodes for the show without it becoming too repetitive or derivative of other similar shows already on TV.

The police procedural drama genre of TV shows is getting to be a very crowded market, and I'm sure that other viewers sometimes have a hard time on deciding what to watch especially if they all come on around the same time. It helps that NCIS adds a little humor to the bleak world of crime. At least by the end of the episode, I don't have to feel that people are the completely hopeless creatures they are as depicted on the small screen. A little humor is just enough to tempt me to hope in all things good. I can't say that for shows like Law & Order which seems to be just as ubiquitous as NCIS.

What I really appreciate about NCIS is their use of actors and actress that I've never heard of. This show is said to boast an ensemble cast, but I'm glad that this show is giving relatively unheard of people a chance. Not every show has to be populated by A-list actors and actresses in order for it to have high ratings. I'm not really sure how I feel about seeing Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J in the lead roles of the NCIS: Los Angeles version. It doesn't bother me; it's just that seeing them working after not seeing them on anything for so long just makes me wonder “Where were you?”

I heard that the spin-off was created by introducing characters in an episode of the original NCIS. I wouldn't be surprised to see characters introduced that could lead to another spin-off. This may not be anytime soon, but probably sometime later. This way, the NCIS series can germinate and have stories to tell for many years to come.
