Jail Riot!!

Wow, what a premise!

If you happened to see this week's (Jan 6) NCIS, you know how unique of a story there was to the show. Ok, the idea of a riot in a prison is not a new one. There are plenty of those in TV shows. I know CSI has had their fair share of them, and they are usually a way to help someone escape.

This time it was a little different. McGee was at the high security women's prison when a riot broke out. The cause of the riot was the death of one of the guards in the prison. All the girls claimed they didn't do it and didn't want to be punished for a crime they didn't commit. Now they want NCIS to solve the murder or they will kill McGee and two guards. What a unique story line. Looking for a killer in a room full of killers.

I was drawn in by some of the conversations that were being had. One of the ones that really got my attention was the woman talking about realizing that years after her crime that she had killed an innocent person and was waiting until the day she died to apologize to the innocent soul she killed. Usually in these shows they don't really let you get to know the suspects, you just watch the case unfold and see what happens. I thought it was a neat look at how people can change after they have done something horrible.

Spoiler Coming Here

Additionally, the ending was not what you might have expected. In this case, the justice came from inside the jail. One of the women who knew she would never get out admitted to the crime so the real killer, who did it to defend her daughter and was going to get out in a year, could go free to be with her family. Yet another example of sympathy and empathy among those who many think have none.

While it's a very serious premise with a lot of angry and violent characters in it, it was also a humorous show. If you watched carefully, the facial expressions, reactions, and motions of people said more about the feelings and situations than any of the dialogue. This not only is a credit to the writers, but also the actors in this show who are able to really become their characters and bring them to life for us to enjoy week after week.
