McGee

Does anyone besides me think the writers are starting to develop Timothy McGee into a smarter (street smart) and more well rounded character? It seems to me they are starting to change his character. Tony and McGee seem to be more buddies than they have been before and McGee is getting into more physical parts of the team's work than he did in previous seasons. In the past, McGee never would have gone on the mission to find Ziva. He was an integral part of that mission this season. Also, in the most recent episode, Tony and McGee went to the car impound lot together. Even thought McGee used his computer skills in the outing, he also was very physical, more like Tony. Tony is also addressing him as more of an equal than he did in seasons past.

I think this goes along with them developing his character in the past as a best selling writer, giving us more information into his outside life; making him more than the stereotypical computer geek. This element of McGee's character also serves as a foil to Tony, who would love to be a best selling author with all the perks that would bring him. McGee just seems to take it in stride and hasn't changed his lifestyle too much that they have shown us; whereas Tony would have really changed his lifestyle with lots of conspicuous spending.

In the most recent episode, McGee had to retake a polygraph test that he had supposedly failed, although nobody could figure out how he had failed it. As it turned out, the woman who was giving the test only wanted a chance to get to see him again and faked the failed test. Although McGee didn't figure out that he had not really failed the test, it was during the retesting that he came to a realization which helped solve the case. This is part of the change I was talking about; in the past, McGee's main contribution to the crime solving was in his computer expertise, not in his general crime solving abilities. It seems to me that they are gradually expanding the character of McGee to make him into more of a “guy” than just a “geek”. Maybe they have decided that geeks can also be competent in other areas, even in relationships with women. I'm really glad about this, because this shows all the geeks out there that there really is hope!

I am hoping that this character development of Tim McGee will continue and will spread to more of the characters. I would like to see more of Abby outside the lab, and more about Ziva as well. It looks like they are going to tease us with whether or not Ziva will get to stay with NCIS for a while, but I would like to see her character be more rounded, like they seem to be doing with McGee. I guess I really like these characters, and would like to know more about all of them.
