Academy winner lends credibility, witty dialogue to NCIS: Los Angeles

NCIS: Los Angeles is one of those rare spin-off programs that actually work. With hunky stars LL Cool J and Chris O'Donnell any script would do well, but with the addition of Academy Award winner, Linda Hunt, the chemistry on screen nearly crackles. Many readers may not remember her award winning performance opposite a young Mel Gibson in The Year of Living Dangerously. Cast as a secondary character in that movie as well as in the NCIS spin-off, Linda Hunt is able to steal the spotlight from her more macho leads.

In a more recent episode, the cast is embroiled in an international jewelry heist/recovery effort. The team is begun on the path after a Marine is found dead in a parking garage of a high-end shopping mall. The suspicions begin when the team discovers that the Marine's hand has been severed – an unusual development for a robbery victim. After tracing the Marine's steps leading to his death, the team finds that he and his girlfriend were supposed to get engaged soon, he just recently returned from a tour in the Middle East, and his best friend had borrowed his vehicle without his knowledge.

Along the way, the team encounters illegal arms dealers, a devout Muslim jewelry store owner, and his reluctant wife. While serving a search warrant, the team uncovers the ceremonial blade (that severed the Marines hand) wrapped in a paper bag and planted in the store owner's house.

The episode raises such questions that we have had a hard time answering ourselves. The jewelry store owner erupts when questioned and responds vehemently, “Why are we considered terrorists, when it was you [the U.S.] who invaded our country under false pretenses, bombed our cities, and killed our women and children?!”

All through this episode the audience is carried along by quick and witty dialogue between Hetty (Linda Hunt), Eric, and new girl Nell. It seems Nell has a habit of finishing other people's sentences, especially when intimidated. All ends well as Nell comes through for the entire team when she produces a present for Hetty's birthday – a feat in itself when the rest of the team has struggled with what to get Hetty or to even mention celebrating her birthday.

The last scene cements the “good guy” concept for the series. Kensi has been moved by the dead Marine's girlfriend and her loss. She returns the recovered engagement ring to the girl friend bringing closure for her.
