Who are they really? An inside look at the Characters of NCIS Los Angeles
NCIS: Los Angeles-The Bank Job
In “The Bank Job” we are given a unique look at the cast of NCIS Los Angles. We get to see them as normal people with collections of favorite items.
Kensi has brought her collection in to try and find a way to keep it safe as her neighborhood has had some break-ins. Kensi's collection includes a stuffed Cobra, a collection of “gellie” bracelets, a harmonica and an item of red & black clothing that is never identified. Sam and “G” poke gentle fun at her for her collections. Yet each item tells a unique story about the character. The “gellie” bracelets show a competitive side (she stresses that it is a COMPLETE collection) and well as a playful side. The Harmonica was given to her by her father, who died tragically. (The case is still open, so maybe someday it will be a storyline.)
Later in the program, “G” questions Sam about his collections. Sam is a very protective person, shown by having a safe (GSA Class 6 Safe) bolted to the floor. When “G” questions him about the contents, Sam is reluctant to say what they are. With “G” insistence, Sam tells him that he has a Mint Condition Patrick Ewing Rookie Card, the entire run of Silver Surfer Comic books, a football signed by the 1986 New York Giants team and 2 tickets to the Lakers vs. Knicks. Sam informs “G” that both tickets are taken. When pressed harder by “G”, Sam reveals he has a Michael Jackson White Sequined glove from Michael Jackson's ߵBad” tour. The Glove had been thrown into the front row. Sam's collection reveals a number of things. If Sam really loves something, he keeps that loved item or person as safe as he can, hence the safe. By looking at Sam, we can see that he is an athlete, but the rookie card, the tickets and the football show the depth of his enjoyment of sports and his loyalty to his teams. The glove shows his softer side, his love of music and enjoyment in life itself. And with the Comics, Sam show that he has a sense of humor.
Hetty reveals that she has had a particular item that was very special to her. She says that she left pieces of it on a quarter mile of a highway, which later leads Sam and “G” to guess which kind of a car she had. Hetty had a 1955 Porsche Spyder. This shows that Hetty loves action and, while she is growing a bit old, she still can handle herself. She also reveals to Kensi her love of vintage jewelry. To the tune of an entire warehouse full. Hetty may not see herself as pretty, but she loves herself and reflects that love by the love of pretty items. She also communicates her nurturing side by offering space for Kensi's items in the NCIS Archives.
Doc temporarily ߵborrows' Kensi's harmonica. She finds out by hearing it being played. Doc confesses a love of the Blues style of music. This shows his emotional side. The Blues is generally a slower style of music and is wonderful for contemplation. Doc thinks far too much and his love of the Blues shows this side very well.
The last item we see is Kensi's father's medal and the note he wrote to her. Everyone has lost a loved one and so can identify with Kensi's need to keep her special objects near her.
All in all, the cast of NCIS Los Angeles has shown their viewers another way to identify with the characters. This can only lead to better and better ratings.
