NCIS, names and abbrevation confusion

Sometimes it seems to me that lately there is a real explosion of crime investigating series out there, seriously, they are showing up as mushrooms after rainy month. But NCIS somewhat stands out in between of them, at least by characters and storyline, which is not such a small part of series, you'll agree. I think that the naming of the series that are running are somewhat tacky and I have a story to prove it.

Few months ago, I went on a one day business trip with a two coworkers, and as usually it ends as a few hours long drive, coworkers and me discuss pretty much everything. Usually we discuss current events, as we don't like to get involved into discussions that include much thinking and brain activity.

So this time, coworker started talking about great episode of NCSI (mind the abbreviation) he watched on tv last evening. As along the NCIS series, our local television runs other series from the CSI branch, I've waited him to tell more about it, as It was obviously to me that he has mistaken the name, but at that time it was not clear which series he was talking about.

At the moment he mentioned some thing Gibbs did, it was pretty clear that he talked about NCIS. But he repeatedly refereed to series as NCSI. So I said to him: "Great, but it seems to me that the name is NCIS." "No, its NCSI, as in naval crime scene investigation", he replied. " No, no it is NCIS, as in Naval crime investigating scenes", I was persist. As he insisted in his explanation of name and abbreviation, we decided to make a bet of it. So we decided that a winner gets a free lunch, three dishes included, not a fast food one.

I guess that intro scenes of NCIS were never closely watched as they were watched by us that evening. Tomorrow at the time of lunch, we both had that sad look on our face, as we both were so close to the free food. So, we sadly admitted that we both were wrong, and that we were so close and so wrong, as "naval criminal investigative service" isn't same as "naval crime scene investigation" and neither as "naval crime investigating scenes", which when I think deeper, even sounds dumb, but as I said, we tend to avoid brain activity. Admitting that, didn't stop us to laugh at scene between Gibbs and DiNozzo in episode from the last night.
