The Gibbs and Mace Link

More background comes to light in this week's NCIS. While the team and the Office of Special Projects continue to work together on the weapons case in California, we learn a little more about the past connection between Gibbs and part of their team.

Gibbs and Mace have seemed unfriendly from day one. The two always seem at a standoff in any scene where they are together and there are a number of moments where you feel you could cut the tension between them with a knife.

This week we found out why. In one scene, Mace was asking Gibbs if he trusted Ziva and he said yes, with his life. But something about the way he said it made it very clear that he did not trust Mace.

There were words exchanged between the two of them that what had happened was 18 years before and that she had changed and was no longer the same person. She also believed he did not trust her ability to do her job.

Later on in her office while she is talking to her profiler, Nate, she explains what had happened.

It was 18 years ago when Gibbs was a Gunnery Sgt and she was Lt who was trying to prove herself that they first met. Gibbs was the suspect in a murder. While she does not elaborate, it seems obvious that while she was pushing hard to convict him, she made mistakes along the way, at his expense.

But at the end of the episode, Nate clears up the ugly past. He gets into the elevator with Gibbs and McGee as they are leaving and after it gets to the bottom floor he asks Gibbs to hold on a minute.

McGee gets the hint and walks away and Nate starts talking " I took an oath not to betray confidences.. But I can't figure how telling a story can be a problem."

"There was a Marine gunnery Sgt. who had taken out a drug dealer who killed his family."

He went on to talk about how this new Lt was trying to prove herself when getting the case, despite the Gunnery Sgt's feelings, "He wanted closure. but she wouldn.t leave his wife and daughter to rest in peace." He then explains how things changed as she looked more into the case, "She got all the evidence together and buried it, decided it was a 'just' kill. My guess is that the guy never knew she had been protecting him all these years."

He walks back inside and you see Gibbs realize that she is no longer the enemy. Knowing where the camera is for the center he looks up and smiles and the camera pans to her smiling inside.
