The Vance Envelope!

Remember that envelope the CIA agent gave Gibbs all those months ago? He had been asked to look into some other things, but also 'gifted' Gibbs an envelope that had the name Leon Vance on the top. Back then, Gibbs didn't open it. Instead he tucked it into a safe spot under his desk.

At that time I wondered just when that envelope would come back around and be seen. My answer was this week.

This week's show opened with a high-priced call girl showing up at a hotel with her 'bodyguard' standing outside as she went in for her 'appointment'. While she took a shower the person in the room (Vance) opened the door and tranquilized the bodyguard. The door across the hall opened and a pair of people (who we assume are agents) pull the bodyguard into that room. If you didn't see it, it was quite the slick move. Within seconds it was over and done and no one would have had any idea what just happened.

So now we are left to wonder why Vance has called in a call girl and drugs her bodyguard. Well it turns out that the girl is someone he knew from years past. Tara was the sister of Tyler Owens, who turned up dead 11 days ago in Chicago. He was a part of the same boxing group as Vance in years past and his body was found in the water, weighted down by weights that were taken from the gym.

Mix in a crime boss who Vance believes did it and a lot of investigating that is being done 'off the books' and you have this case in a nutshell. The dynamics were quite interesting. Gibbs was told by Vance to stay out as he investigated the crime and that had Gibbs wondering just what was going on and what Vance may be hiding about the case.

By the end of the show he shows Vance that he has an envelope from the CIA with information about him, but hadn't opened it. He asks if he should and Vance has no answer other than to tell him, "You hold on to it, it'll keep me honest.'

As the show wraps up (I'm not going to tell you who did it) Gibbs finds himself still with a lot of questions about Vance. Some of the things he said about the case are not matching up with the evidence and Gibbs finds himself once again holding on to that envelope. He even fiddles with the clasp a bit but then decides to put it down.

I wonder when he will ever open it!
