The great debate: gibbs gut vs Vance

Once again, old tensions rise to the surface on this week's episode of NCIS, as Gibbs and Director Vance go head to head over a case that has personal meaning to Director Vance. The episode is interesting in that the plot leaves Director Vance coming off as a hothead, as someone who doesn't care so much about finding the truth, but who will put away the innocent if it suits his needs. The episode ends with Gibbs gut instincts saving the day and preventing an innocent boy from being imprisoned for killing his father, but instead putting the real killer behind bars where they belong. The episode leaves you wondering if this lapse of judgment of Vance's part was just that, a lapse of judgment or an attempt to show the inner vulnerabilities of the man, or if there are darker implications afoot, implying that Vance has never quite emotionally recovered from being gravely injured earlier in the year while protecting Eli David from an assassination attempt.

Many episodes before have showed or provided some evidence of Vance's hot-headed side, but this episode stepped it up a notch. The rest of the team was basically a side note in this episode and although their work helped to crack the case by bringing the first suspect to light, the dynamics of the team were a minimal part of this week's plot.

The plot of this episode touched on many issues faced by many families in society today and quite possibly touched a nerve or two of those parents watching, as the subtext of the plot was the way that drug-addiction and overdose devastates families today by stealing their children and leading them down a dangerous slope that often ends with a tragedy that can't be put right easily and sometimes, not at all.

The episode ends with the innocent drug-addicted teen free, but with no parents to help him find his way as his father is now dead and his mentally-ill mother is responsible for killing him. In what might be the first real manly act of the teen's life, he aided NCIS in finding his mother and in obtaining a confession. When the team raises the question to Gibbs at the end of the episode as to what will happen to the teen now, Gibbs responds, ߵThat's up to him, leaving the watcher to know that most often, the key to saving yourself lies in your own hands, as opposed to anyone else's.
