Tony DiNozzo and Movie References

One of the funnier, and often very annoying traits of Anthony DiNozzo in NCIS is his references to movies. Not an episode goes by where something, happening in a case, in the office, or his personal life, is not somehow connected to a movie that he once saw.

I really like the fact that he is using his movie knowledge in an attempt to teach Ziva about American culture. The writers seem to be enjoying this side story line as well, as they are having Ziva learn more about American movies and periodically be able to shoot back at one of his references. It's a great little side story that always is something I love to hear while they are on the job, solving a case.

Now the question becomes, how many of those movie references do you know, without them telling you the movie? Do you have to wait until Tony explains the quote or do you already know what he is referring to when the first line or reference comes out?

Let's test that knowledge! Under the file of just for fun, let's see how many of these movie references made in the show you can connect to the movie. We'll make this fair for everyone by taking on reference from each of the first 5 seasons so newcomers can also see if they can connect the movie.

First I'll list the quote, then the movie he is referring to:

Season 1

"That was a girl, pretending to be a guy, pretending to be a girl."

Season 2

"I'll get that APB out on the lollipop guild."

Season 3

"What we got here is a failure to communicate"

Season 4

"The vessel with the pestle holds the brew that is true".

Season 5

"Not if he's the new Dread Pirate Roberts."

Answers

Season 1

Victor Victoria reference from the Dead Man Talking episode.

Season 2

Wizard of Oz Reference from the See No Evil episode.

Season 3

Cool Hand Luke Reference from the Frame - Up episode.

Season 4

Court Jester reference in the Grace Period episode.

Season 5

A Princess Bride reference in Identity Crisis episode.

So, How did you do? If you didn't do as well as you would have liked to, never fear, you will hopefully have many more seasons to keep learning about all sorts of movies thanks to the ongoing Tony References.

The thing I dont understand though is that in the first season when he is at the Gitmo bar watching Cassidy, the bartender uses movie references and Dinozzo is clueless to them and with his movie interests he should have known them. Is it that he did not develop as a movie buff until after that experience or did the writers make a mistake?

Where was this text copied from...

"One of the funnier, and often very annoying traits[..]"

...because it's in direct contradiction with:

"I really like the fact that[..]"

Lesson to be learned? Be original, instead of trying to be popular (insert original movie reference, following). ;)

Does anybody know the name of the movie he copies on his date with Jeanne where he pulls a spaghetti dinner out of his trunk? If you know it could you email it to me? Thanks, I really appreciate the help.

Has anyone else noticed that early in the series DiNozzo was clueless about movies? In S1E1, Yankee White it was Gibbs who made all the references to Air Force One not Tony. And in S1E8 Minimum Security Both Gibbs and Caitlin referred to Shane and Alan Ladd and Tony did not seem to even know either one. He even told a bartender that he had never seen the Maltese Falcon. So, how, in a couple of years did he become such an expert in movies and TV shows.

I would like to learn more on how this evolved.~~~~

Didn't notice that before, Rich. I'll have to watch them again. Thanks.

I noticed the same thing!! It's been bugging me. How did he know nothing in Season 1 and then know everything in Season 2 and beyond. The writers never mention that.

Perhaps people were complaining about Tony's "cluelessness" that the writers decided to change his character. Just a thought.
