Mentalist is cute, but no intellectual treat

Following the trend on CBS of airing procedurals, the Mentalist is like CSI-lite. Instead of hard-nose science, we get Mr. Jane who used to do parlor tricks before real life caught up to him and he lost his family. Simon Baker is easy on the eyes and has an comfortable banter, but at the end of the day, all you're stuck with is hunches. Sometimes, when he takes time to explain why he's doing what he's doing, it's mildly interesting. Otherwise it makes you feel just as lost and frustrated as his colleagues. And seriously, could they think of a better name for the agency than the California Bureau of Investigation? The concept for the show really isn't half bad when you watch the episodes, but the need to complete each case in an hour (per the CSI formula) makes each episode so predictable, it becomes monotonous the more you watch it. The rest of the cast can be interesting at times, but really is just a compilation of stock characters from other shows. You have the tough-guy jock who's not so smart, but really a softie, the smart Asian (really?), the hard-as-nails female agent who needs to prove herself, and the eager-to-please rookie who needs to overcome her beautiful exterior. I watch it when there is nothing else on. It's like ramen. Sometimes it hits the right spot, but only if there isn't any better choice. And afterwards, you feel a little empty.
