Commercial is Louder than the TV Show
Ever since my wife and I had our first baby, we haven't really been able to catch the TV shows as they air. The two TV shows that we definitely have to watch is Heroes and Chuck. Nice thing with computer technology nowadays is that you can catch up on your favorite show on the internet. Kudoos to NBC for putting full episodes of Heroes and Chuck on their web site. My wife and I watch them religiously.
Much like TV shows airing over the airwave, NBC insert commercials in every episode. Lately, they are Target commercials. My wife and I noticed that when the commercials are on, they are noticeable louder. In fact, not just noticeable, the commercial are a lot louder than the TV show. We always have to turn the volume way up during the show and then turn the volume way down during the commercial.
At first, it was just a learned reaction. Then I started thinking about this problem. And then I realized . . . hey, it's not like the TV studio don't have the technology to equalize the volume. They do it all the time for TV shows, movies, and music. I mean, even home stereo systems nowadays have automatic equalization functions for CD's and MP3's. So for the studio it's a piece piece of cake to level the audio volume.
That means . . . hey . . . NBC is doing it on purpose! For some reason they turned the commercial volume way up and turning down the volume when the show comes back on. At first, my wife and I couldn't think of any reasons why they would do that. But after a few minutes we figured they did it because many people take trips down to the bathroom and the kitchen during commercials. NBC turned up the volume so that even if the audience can't see the Target commercials, they can still hear the jingle and the propaganda through their homes.
And that means for those of us who actually sit through the commercials, we'd have to manually adjust the volume all the time. What a tiresome task!
