NCIS Final Showdown With The Reynosa Cartel

The NCIS eighth season premiere episode “Spider and the Fly” once again pits the team and primarily special agent Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) against the Reynosa cartel and it's elusive but deadly leader (Paloma Reynosa.) Alejandro Rivera's sister appears to be busy reestablishing a new drug pipeline along the southern border states, while at the same time leaving not so subtle clues for agent Gibbs, such as paying a visit to his father and attempting to assassinate him. Fortunately, the elder Gibbs kept an old but reliable shotgun behind the counter and narrowly escaped right before cartel thugs opened fire using automatic weapons from outside of his store.

Meanwhile, agents Ziva David (Cote De Pablo) and Tim McGee (Sean Murray) returned from their respective trips to Florida and Canada to join Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) in investigating the killing of a helicopter pilot in a field. It is discovered during the course of their preliminary investigation that the pilot was most likely killed by his clients the notorious Reynosa cartel, but sadly eliminated once his services were no longer needed. However, the victim managed to kill one of the cartel members during the ensuing shootout before dying in the field. This individual (pilot) was obviously targeted because NCIS would be the primary law enforcement agency handling the case. This particular realization was not lost on Gibbs, but proved to be a sober reminder that Paloma Reynosa is carefully orchestrating a series of deadly events to get his attention and put him on notice. The only problem is that a trail of bodies along the US southern border and in Washington DC didn't offer any helpful clues on Miss Reynosa's whereabouts.

Agent Gibbs appears to be more concerned than ever that Paloma will soon be turning her full attention to him and his loved ones, once she's finished with all of her business arrangements. Mr. Rivera was able to secure diplomatic credentials with the Mexican embassy despite his well established connection to organized crime. Under the guise of international cooperation he visited NCIS director Vance (Rocky Carroll) and offered a proposal that entailed allowing his sister to be turned over to the Mexican authorities for prosecution in exchange for revealing information on potential drug shipments and suspected cartel distributors operating in the US. However, the real purpose of the visit was to simply place a listening device in the director's office.

Soon thereafter, the team discovers that the cartel had attacked the two NCIS agents protecting the father of agent Gibbs, succeeding into gaining entrance into the home, but uncharacteristically stopping short of finishing off their intended target (elder Gibbs) and Mike Franks who managed to safely get out of Mexico. This latest attempt was part of a larger intimidation strategy that was aimed at antagonizing agent Gibbs before the final showdown. Director Vance, Gibbs, and the rest of the team devised a plan to draw out Paloma and her brother to an isolated NCIS safe house where the takedown can best be achieved without endangering any nearby civilians.

The team was fully aware of the listening device in the director's office and used it to reveal the location of a safe house where the elder Gibbs was supposedly staying. Director Vance invited Alejandro Rivera to NCIS headquarters and indicated his willingness to hammer out an agreement that would benefit both sides. However, the real reason was to make him believe that his sister was killed. The cartel in this instance firmly believed that NCIS was powerless to stop them and underestimated their capabilities. Overconfidence can sometimes work against you even when correctly anticipating most of your opponent's moves.

In the final scene of the episode Alejandro who was stricken with rage and grief over his sister's death, drove to the secluded safe house location and opened fire. NCIS agents quickly moved in and arrested him. Agent Gibbs led him into the home where Alejandro realized that his sister was in fact dying on the floor from gunshot wounds as a result of his desperate action to spray the home with bullets hoping that it's occupants would be killed. He apparently succeeded.
