'Jurisdiction', Buried Treasure and the CGIS (attn: SPOILERS)

NCIS: Season 7, Episode 18, 'Jurisdiction'

The discovery of a body in Navy diving gear on a beach prompts the NCIS team to investigate the death of a Navy diver, Lt. Jensen. During their investigation they come into contact with a smaller, 'sibling' agency, the Coast Guard Investigatory Service, who are investigating Jensen's involvement in the death of the captain of a salvage boat. Not only does Gibbs have to share his case, he has to share it with a certain Agent Abigail Borin, the pragmatic leader of the CGIS team whose mannerisms (smacking her team lightly when they screw up, a no nonsense manner) are amusingly similar to his own. She also happens to be a redhead, and every viewer knows how partial Gibbs is to redheads.

The two teams work together and uncover a storage locker full of Spanish antiquities, revealing a search for buried treasure in the form of a shipwrecked Spanish ship, funded by a rich local doctor who has not been seen for a week. When his wife tells them that he was no longer rich and had embezzled money from his corporate account to fund the treasure hunt as a final attempt to recoup his losses he becomes the main suspect. However, Ducky discovers a medical condition in Jensen's body that Jensen never had- a medical condition that is clearly stated in the doctor's own medical records. So Jensen is once more at large and implicated in two murders, that of the boat captain and the doctor.

In the meantime, Abby (briefly distracted by a change in Caf-Pow's recipe, but soon back on track) discovers that the cache of Spanish antiquities are all fakes. Jensen's girlfriend is caught buying tickets for the two of them to Mexico, but this, like the disguised body, is only a red herring as Jensen didn't come to the rendezvous. Gibbs' interview with the girlfriend finds a connection between Jensen and the doctor's wife, which is suspicious as the wife claimed never to have met Jensen. The team rushes to the doctor's house to find his widow and Jensen frantically searching for the embezzled money and preparing to flee the country, making Tony's favourite theory right for a change- it's always the wife.

The episode ends with Gibbs grudgingly thanking Agent Borin for her help, and with Ziva and Tony watching 'The Black Pirate' in the office, ostensibly because both their dates cancelled.

This was an enjoyable episode. Watching Gibbs spar with Borin was very entertaining, as were Tony's frequent references to pirate or buried treasure movies. Finally, it continues to develop the Tony/Ziva relationship, something that has been a constant source of discussion for fans, especially since Episode 13 of this series, when Ziva and Tony possibly sleep together in Paris. I like their rapport as friends, but I don't know that the writers will ever put fans out of their misery and actually get them together romantically. Or perhaps they'll pull a CSI and say that they've been together for ages...
