Black Level Makes Real Difference

Just a month ago, I watched "Terminator: Salvation" and thought the movie is really dark. And I don't mean that the plot is dark, I mean the picture is dark as in I can hardly see anything.

Today, while watching "The Goonies" with the kids, I again, found myself wondering why the movie was so dark in the abandoned hotel and the tunnels. I played with my Panasonic Viera TC-P50C1 HDTV's setting and found that its "Black Level" can make a huge difference. The "Black Level" defaults to "Dark" and makes the black areas on the screen really black. After changing it to "Light", I found myself enjoying "The Goonies" so much more.

On the Panasonic Viera TC-P50C1, "Black Level" is under "Menu" -> "Picture" -> "Advanced picture". Next time you feel the movie is too dark on your HDTV, you can check to see if it is possible to adjust the "Black Level" on your HDTV. Chances are that setting is hidden away in layers of menu. Now I have a strong desire to watch "Terminator: Salvation" again with the lighter black level.
