"A disk read error occurred"
The hard drive on my HP Pavilion Entertainment Notebook PC dv1227us has crashed. I ordered a Seagate ST980815A Momentus 80 GB hard drive to replace it. After formatting the drive, putting a drive image onto it using DriveImage XML, set the partition active, I tried booting it up. But instead of going into Windows XP, it showed the following error message:
A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
No matter how many time I pressed the Ctrl+Alt+Del combination, I get the same error message. Not sure why this problem showed up. Anyone got a clue?

I now have more insight into this problem. This problem only occurs when I restore the hard drive using the image that I created last night for the purpose. But restoring an earlier image (one that I created on the same computer as soon as I installed Windows XP) and the drive boot up fine.
I thought I had fixed it. Before I restored the older image, I used installed FreeDOS on the new drive first, hoping that it would set-up all the master boot record (MBR) right, etc. But after getting the older image to work, I tried again with the newer image. Again, I was at the "A disk read error occurred" prompt.
I'm going to have to play with it some more. There is some boot magic that I can't put my finger on yet.

I have more insight into this problem now. It seems that the disk images from my Toshiba MK3209MAT 3.2 GB hard drive do not boot when restored on the Seagate ST980815A Momentus 80 GB hard drive. On the other hand, the disk image from my Toshiba MK4313MAT 4.3 GB hard drive boots fine when restored to the 80 GB hard drive.
The question is whether the 3.2 GB image will boot on any hard drive at all? And whether the 4.3 GB image will, perhaps, not boot on some hard drives. Perhaps the physical drive layouts are different???
